EPISODE TWO / WE REVIVE CHILDHOOD TREATS

Talk about childhood days and a few things come to mind—food that looked fun and tasted so, toys that piled up at home, and school that felt nothing like school but playtime with classmates.

Icing biscuits (those bun-like things with white, pink, yellow and green icing bits on top), Hacks, Ribena, Fruit tips, and ice popsicles were yummy childhood treats that made me a trigger happy kid. I had 10 Barbies and 1 Ken doll; I know, lucky Ken. Apparently they’ve broken up; how ridiculous is that ! I played masak-masak (and wonder why the domestic goddess in me has yet to surface) and taught my soft toys Math using my very own mini whiteboard. Hopscotch, zeropoint, five stones, skipping and catching were what recess in school was for. And it was the only time when it was vaguely possibly to get full marks and a Well Done sticker for any paper.

Now that everyone that I’ve grown up with has aged with me, we look at kids these days who have never tasted a Rabbit sweet (better known as “bai tu nai tang”), kids who trade the playground for Playstation, kids who are no longer scared of their teachers...I feel insanely old, out of touch, and reminded of the responsibilities that we now need to assume.

Growing up is hard to do, so I hope that this new episode brings us back to the days where we led truly carefree lives—when we were contented with a soft toy from Dad for doing well on a paper, went ecstatic getting permission to drink F&N orange during Chinese New Year, and watched Channel 8 dramas that were actually good ;)
