Episode Three sees the debut of thedevilwears' very own self-manufactured label, lovechar, in the style of Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl Season Two's first episode just before the White Party (which I also love !)...
I never quite understood the lure of American dramas when everyone else was obsessing over F.R.I.E.N.D.S., Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, Greys, Prison Break... Then Gossip Girl came along and that ended the drought of American dramas for me.
Filled with witty speech, loads of eye candies, great styles and characters that the average girl going on woman could empathise with sealed the deal for me. I couldn't tear myself away, and would only watch it on high definition (say no to low quality streaming videos !) because that was the only way to bask in the glory of its greatness.
If you haven't realised, I'm an extremely biased fan of Serena van der Woodsen and Blake Lively, who plays the character. So don’t tell me about how Blair looks and dresses better than her, which I know is true at times. I mean, Blair is styled after the legendary Audrey Hepburn; Serena is styled after fabulous Kate Moss—you don’t compare apples with oranges, do you ?
Besides, what's not to love about Serena/Blake’s sexy drawl ? And her megawatt smile ? But what really won me over is her character in the show and how Blake visualises the development of her character in an otherwise (apparent) frivolous plot. To prove my point, I dug out an interview with Blake Lively who was featured in the September issue of CLEO last year. P.S. Yes I stash away nonsense stuff like that, except they’re not nonsense to me !
Blake: “My character gets caught up in this universe where kids are handed everything on a silver platter. She sees her best friend’s boyfriend. She wants him, so she takes him. And I think what’s important is that she realises she was wrong and needs to reform herself. She goes away to boarding school, tries to make herself a better person, comes back into this world and is fighting not to be sucked into it. I think that’s really great, that you witness that people can change. I think everybody has a good soul at the heart of it.”
I concur, and that is the story of how I became a Serena van der Woodsen fan. (:
